Before anything else, can we all take a moment to fully appreciate that today, a friendly, fully domesticated duck was dropped off at the shelter where I work? Yes, for real. She likes to be held and pet, and will curl up in a coworker’s lap while muttering content duck-thoughts to itself. My job is rarely glamorous, but it’s also rarely boring.
All right then, Blaugust! What is it and why am I participating?
Blaugust is a blogging initiative started by Belghast over at Tales of the Aggronaut. Each of us who have signed up will attempt to write a blog post of at least 10 sentences each day in August. (There are also guidelines for vlogs.) The complete rules, prize list, and directions for signing up can be found on the Blaugust Initiative page – and yes, you can still participate even though it’s already started!
As for why I’m participating, there’s a few reasons.
For one, I’d like to give myself practice being more flexible in my blogging. Most of my entries are on the long side, and on specific topics like Newbie Groups or endgame in The Secret World. While that’s all well and good when I have a particular theme I want to discuss, it means that I’m much less likely to post if I don’t have much time, or a theme that will hold up for at least 1000 words. While reading blogs like Gamer Girl Confessions, I’ve seen that it’s perfectly enjoyable to read a post that contains a few small topics, instead. While I’ve started doing that already, I think posting daily will help me break out of my self-imposed constraints even more.
Speaking of other blogs, this is also a fun opportunity to meet other bloggers. There’s a vast community of bloggers out there, and I’ve never put myself out there to meet and learn from them. I’ve already found some super interesting blogs to follow – when I get a chance, I’ll add a post that lists all of the participants.
How I handle time – or the lack thereof – is another thing I’d like to improve on. Part of the reason I’ve gotten so off-schedule is it’s been tough for me to make myself write on days I work. While that’s understandable since I work nine to ten hour days that are quite physical (all those kennels aren’t going to clean themselves!), I’d still like to show myself that I can manage something fairly coherent even after a long day. In addition, this might encourage me to write multiple posts on my days off.
Finally, I hope to use this month to experiment a bit on topics. While I’d like to maintain this as primarily a gaming blog, sometimes I have other things I’d like to mention. A few days ago I discovered that emotes for introverts exist – that’s the kind of thing I’d like to be able to mention here despite not being game related.
Or, you know…when we have a duck at work.
Want to join in on #Blaugust? There’s still time! Visit the Blaugust Initiative page, and then head over to the Nook to get signed up and see what everyone else is up to.
A duck that cuddles and makes cute noises at dropped off at your work place? Where do I sign up for this??

Working at an animal shelter means a lot of poop and other not fun things, but a lot of cute as well. The duck is a new one on me, though!
