#Blaugust2016 – Day One of…Many?

Blaugust2016

Wow, it’s really been a whole year since last Blaugust. O_o

Blaugust, for those who don’t know, is an August blogging initiative started by Belghast over at Tales of the Aggronaut. While the big goal has previously been to post a substantive post (or vlog) for each day of August, this year it’s focused on what the point of it all was supposed to be. Building community, and the benefits of regularly posting content on some sort of schedule. You can read his thoughts in more detail on his recent post, A Chill Blaugust.

I participated and…I hate to say “won.” I *completed* my Blaugust 2015 goal of posting each day. Those posts can be found here, under the #Blaugust2015 tag. I’m still rather proud of some of them. Continue Reading

CONvergence, Inclusiveness, and Safety

*insert joke about how dusty the blog is*

I always underestimate how much energy it takes to start a new job, especially if it’s a management position in a new company. (Means you’re often trying to manage other people while still learning the policies and norms of the company!) I’m very lucky to have a great team, my bosses included, but I suspect my silence here is a pretty good indicator of how tiring the last six months have been. Not necessarily tiring in a bad way…just tiring.

I think I’m at a point now where I can start to remember what I learned last Blaugust – sometimes it’s more important to get your words on the blog than to fret about how perfect they are.

[For those who don’t know, I’ve continued to be active on the Beyond the Veil podcast/livestream. Still talking The Secret World news most Thursday nights. I’ve also managed at least a couple streams with Otterdown, though lagging on my own streams. I’ve got all kinds of backlog on TSW and other games, but that’s not what I wanted to talk about tonight.]

CONvergence 2016

If you follow me on social media, you may have caught me gushing about the scifi/fantasy con I’m going to this weekend. It’s exciting for me, personally, because I’ll be seeing some people I haven’t seen in a long time – some of them for nearly a decade. And because it’s a pretty kick ass four days of assorted geekery. (OMG panel about The Phantom Tollbooth!!! <3)

I would be excited about CONvergence (CVG) for the obvious reasons alone, but I’ve always been proud of our con here for extra reasons. They have been putting real effort, for years, into being a safe place for everyone. I was going to talk about why each of these things are good and important…but you know what? This is an informal blog, writing while tired. Take as truth that the things I list are important to me. (Though if I miss something that doesn’t mean it’s not important.) Continue Reading

Celebrity deaths don’t tend to phase me very much. It’s not that I don’t value celebs as people. Death, in general, isn’t something that bothers me very much, as strange as that sounds. I mourn those close to me when I know my time with them is over, but I don’t feel bad for the person who died. They’ve moved on to the next adventure, to a mystery the rest of us have yet to see. If you don’t believe in any type of afterlife, then they don’t have to worry about anything when their life is over.

When a celebrity (or other stranger) dies, I feel compassion for their family and loved ones who must feel the loss most keenly. I’ll acknowledge the person’s work, especially if I’m a fan. In the case of someone like Christopher Lee, I thought it was a shame we were losing an amazing actor and someone who always seemed like a genuinely great person – but it wasn’t a personal feeling.

I always knew it was going to be different with David Bowie, and the crazy thing is I’m still not sure why.

Gryph Streams The Park

Starting the year off right with a long-promised livestream of Funcom’s The Park. Apologies for the quiet start, tired Gryph worked today and didn’t think to boost her mic to make up for it.

I absolutely love this game, as I may have mentioned more than once. The expected bits of horror work, but even more than that, the later dive into non-supernatural horror hits me very hard on a personal level every time.

Want to catch my stream live? I announce my streams on Twitter and Facebook, or you can follow me on Twitch!

2015 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2015 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 4,600 times in 2015. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 4 trips to carry that many people.

I’ve Got a Feeling, This Year’s For Me and You…

End of

(“Fairytale of New York,” always my favorite holiday song. Though I think The Tim Malloys cover it best.)

Holy crap, it’s New Year’s Eve, how did that happen?! I’ve been fighting a nasty headache all day – go fig – so we’ll see how coherent I am.

It’s been a crazy, wonderful, and tiring year for me. I started this blog New Year’s Day 2015, and soon afterwards I successfully auditioned for Beyond the Veil. I never expected so many people to follow my blog, nor to meet so many new friends and fellow bloggers. I didn’t fully realize I’d be meeting devs from The Secret World and so many amazing people in the TSW community through BTV. For someone who can be rather asocial when it comes to gaming, my gaming social circle exploded this year. 🙂

I managed the best year yet for Extra Life, not only in donations but in pure fun while running with Otterdown and other friends in TSW. Thanks to a computer upgrade, I was able host my own livestream – something I’ve been wanting to get back to for a long time, and not just for Extra Life. The stream is up on Youtube, hopefully soon to be one of many. Continue Reading

Super quick post so you can see how my first attempt at fulfilling my promise from Extra Life went. I’m not 100% happy with the color, and will be trying it again soon; but it is indeed purple!

Kazul and Vestige

*stops to catch breath*

The joy of working retail during the holidays is nearly over, but I have a precious day off before I jump back into the fray tomorrow.

I’ve got some topics I’ll be covering soon thanks to posts from my fellow bloggers that resonated with me, but I’ll be giving those their own time and space. Check out “One Girl Gamer to Rule Them All” at Cannot Be Tamed and “Gaming Fads of 2015: The Feminist Boogeyman” at The Lair of the Wolf Dragon for two that got my brains going in a serious way.

TSW Holiday Event and Issue 13

DarkGryph Xmas2015

I’ve had Final Fantasy XIV on a bit of a pause for the last week or more. This wasn’t intentional, I just cannot resist the siren song of The Secret World during the holidays. (Ok, I’m always in TSW to some degree, but when events are happening I get sucked in all the more.) I’ll save the in-depth talk about why for another day, but I’ll at least give an update.
