On Friday, folks browsing The Secret World forums got a surprise. A thread had been started by one of the ingame NPCs. The post asked for help, and provided a short number sequence and a garbled audio file. Today, there was another post from that NPC ā this time with a longer number string and a longer, still garbled audio file. Part of this second post’s puzzle has been solved, leading to a free trial key meant for new players interested in the game, but the rest of it is still being puzzled over by the community. Secret World Legends
You’re welcome for the earworm. š
This week, there were aĀ lot of changes going on in my favorite MMO, The Secret World. Our Game Director, Joel Bylos, announced that he will be moving on to a different Funcom project and the massiveĀ Enhanced Player Experience updateĀ went live. (detailed patch notes are also up)
This is still going to be a short post, for a couple reasons. Continue Reading
So, I had other topics I could have babbled about, but then this month’s Game Director letter dropped for The Secret World. I could geek over the whole thing; but then I’d have nothing to say on the podcast tomorrow. š
It did remind me of something that not all companies do well, though ā listening to their audience. In this case, their new player audience. Continue Reading
“I hate that game, it’s such a grind.” I often hear this complaint, and I’ve probably said it myself before. Most gamers can probably think of at least one game where mindlessly running the same missions or fighting the same battles over and over in order to progress soured the rest of the experience. So why, then, am I sometimes a fan of grinding? Continue Reading
I had a different plan for this post. The holiday events in The Secret World just wrapped up the other day, and DC Universe OnlineĀ tweeted that they were extending theirs until January 12. I wanted to talkĀ about winter holiday events – the types of events that various games put together, and then a bit about how much I appreciate it when they clearly put a lot of effort in. I took massive amounts of screenshots and had an idea of how I wanted to approach it.
Then, something cool happened during a pugĀ (Pickup Group/Game, random players as opposed to a group of folks who know each other) in The Secret World. It’sĀ something that has happened before but gives me pause each time it does. I don’t want this blog to turn intoĀ only “be nice” stories, but I’ve seen a few friends lamentĀ a lack of “players doing cool things” stories online.Ā In the interest of talking more about what players are doing right, I’m going to tell my story, and save the event chatter for a different post. As a sidenote – I’m amused that the one dungeon I forgot to get screenshots of is the one involved in this story. š TSWDB (awesome player-run TSW site) has some under “2013 – Krampusnacht” for those interested. While I was doing my thanks you’s for the new year, I mentioned “awesome gaming communities” more than once. A good community isĀ important to me when I’m deciding where I’m going to spend my time.Ā I’ve always said I deal with enough jerks offline, I don’t need them during my game time, too. Ā Just calling a community “awesome and win” isn’t very descriptive though, soĀ let’s talk aboutĀ something my favorite gaming communities have in common. Continue Reading
