I suppose I could try to blame the Steam Sale for my caving in and getting this game…but, I’d be lying. I planned on picking up Lego Jurassic World almost from the moment I realized it was a thing that exists – while I tried to stay on the fence, seeing that you could play as dinosaurs won me over completely. Monday night I was kidnapped (otternapped?) by my awesome friends from the OtterDown cabal to finish up my Elite dungeons in The Secret World. It’s only after completing those dungeons, and then beating the GateKeeper, that one becomes eligible to run the highest level dungeons in game – the Nightmare dungeons. I had a wonderful time dungeoning with the Otters (video here) and beat the GateKeeper later that night. My main is overdue and in all honesty overgeared for the fight so it was about time. As some of you already know, one of the big deals in The Secret World this week was the patch that dropped today. Other than gaining a new mini-dungeon, achievement reward vendors, and assorted other things, TSW has added mounts for the first time. Continue Reading
Before I explain the kittens, I’ll mention that I do have another article up on Holosuite – if you’re interested in my thoughts about Renaissance Festivals I’ll link it here: HUZZAH!
On to the kittens and the wonkiness of my updates lately. I started a new (offline) job a couple weeks ago at my local animal shelter. It’s been lovely, but my new schedule has been a bigger change than I expected. (I also managed to catch a nasty bug last weekend, though thankfully not a serious one.) I do intend to continue this blog, and to resume posting at least once a week. Thank you so much for your patience as I sort out the best way to fit everything in! There is a good chance that I’ll move my main posting day to Tuesday or Wednesday, plus the regular posts for Holosuite on the first and fifteenth of the month.
I’m hoping to update the Currently Playing section Soon(TM), and I may be adjusting the Otterly Gaming page since I don’t think we’ll be running DCUO this year. I also plan on adding a new section where I can link my offsite articles.
Thanks again for your patience, I’ll get a real post up as soon as I can! 🙂
Well, I’m a day late posting, and this will be a somewhat condensed entry. I had a doctor’s appointment on Monday – everything is fine, but we’re trying me out on a new prescription. The side effects at the moment include making my thinking awfully muddy and fairly unfocused, so I’m not exactly in a great position to think deep thoughts! I’m not entirely certain I can word coherantly at the moment, so this should be interesting.
Still, I’d like to at least touch on some of my first impressions of The Secret’s World’s Issue 11 content. This new issue came out for subs and lifetime members on May 6th, and opened up for everyone else on the 9th. (Though they decided to also allow Early Access for those who had previously bought The Fall of Tokyo pack, a great move on their part.) Spoilers ahead for anyone who hasn’t has the chance to play yet! Continue Reading

[Announcement: If anyone missed it, my first article for Holosuite Media is live! Holosuite is the parent company for the Beyond the Veil podcast, and I am super excited to join the team as a staff writer. Article can be found here: Reboots, Remakes, and Sequels – Oh, *Facepalm*. ]
I had a different plan for today’s blog; I’d started writing my thoughts about the Silent Hill franchise and the cancellation of Silent Hills. I had an experience that bothered me while gaming last night, though, so here we are. Continue Reading
For those who don’t know, a friend of mine does an online gaming culture show called MUD2MMO. I don’t always agree with Tyger’s points, as he knows ^^, but it’s a solid show and good at starting conversations. His most recent episode deals with Defining Hardcore and Casual Players, which is something I’ve contemplated myself.
In short, I more often see the labels doing harm than good. Continue Reading
With the launch of Issue 11 for the The Secret World imminent (or at least coming SOON™), I’ve been thinking about choices and consequences in games. Issue 11 promises to wrap up the story of the game thus far (don’t worry, we’ve been assured it’s only a wrap up for Part One) including some pretty major choices the players have been making at key points in the story. TSW has crafted the story in such a way that despite much speculation, none of us is completely certain what effects these choices will have; the game is famously more about shades of gray than a strict right/wrong dichotomy. Still, the idea that we’ve decided the course of major events ingame has always been exciting. Continue Reading
I’ve been pretty busy with offline stuff this week, so this post is going to go out a little late. But one of the things I was busy with today was getting my entry together for the #IAMTSW cosplay contest, and I thought I’d take a moment to talk about why I went with the outfit and picture I did. One of the MMO’s I’ve been playing, and enjoying, for the last couple years is DC Universe Online. The fights feel fun, there’s room for exploration and achievement hunting, and I love being able to interact with my favorite DC characters. As much as I tend to prefer games where my character can play any role, there’s also fun to be had in the creativity of coming up with new characters – I’ve got almost my limit of 16.
The game has a number of changes planned for an update that’s coming up, and there’s a section of those changes that I hugely do not like. The short version (to the best of my understanding) is that instead of getting less, but still relevant, currency for running things below your level, you will now get zero relevant currency (so only item drops and achievements where applicable) if you run things below the set of missions deemed to be appropriate for your level.
I primarily play DCUO as my wind-down, relaxing game; once I got into endgame with my main characters I stopped pushing so hard to get all-of-the-gear-asap and prefer to rerun old content. Having said that, I do still need to feel like I’m making some form of progress, so gaining currency slowly by running easier content is exactly how I play.
Obviously, I’m not super thrilled with the proposed change. It got me thinking, though, about the way I react to something like that, how others react, and why I react the way I do. (Note that this is not meant to call anyone out. Anything I mention is something that I’ve seen across games and across years of gaming, not trying to launch rockets at anyone in particular.)
