(“Fairytale of New York,” always my favorite holiday song. Though I think The Tim Malloys cover it best.)
Holy crap, it’s New Year’s Eve, how did that happen?! I’ve been fighting a nasty headache all day – go fig – so we’ll see how coherent I am.
It’s been a crazy, wonderful, and tiring year for me. I started this blog New Year’s Day 2015, and soon afterwards I successfully auditioned for Beyond the Veil. I never expected so many people to follow my blog, nor to meet so many new friends and fellow bloggers. I didn’t fully realize I’d be meeting devs from The Secret World and so many amazing people in the TSW community through BTV. For someone who can be rather asocial when it comes to gaming, my gaming social circle exploded this year. 🙂
I managed the best year yet for Extra Life, not only in donations but in pure fun while running with Otterdown and other friends in TSW. Thanks to a computer upgrade, I was able host my own livestream – something I’ve been wanting to get back to for a long time, and not just for Extra Life. The stream is up on Youtube, hopefully soon to be one of many. Continue Reading
*stops to catch breath*
The joy of working retail during the holidays is nearly over, but I have a precious day off before I jump back into the fray tomorrow.
I’ve got some topics I’ll be covering soon thanks to posts from my fellow bloggers that resonated with me, but I’ll be giving those their own time and space. Check out “One Girl Gamer to Rule Them All” at Cannot Be Tamed and “Gaming Fads of 2015: The Feminist Boogeyman” at The Lair of the Wolf Dragon for two that got my brains going in a serious way.
TSW Holiday Event and Issue 13
I’ve had Final Fantasy XIV on a bit of a pause for the last week or more. This wasn’t intentional, I just cannot resist the siren song of The Secret World during the holidays. (Ok, I’m always in TSW to some degree, but when events are happening I get sucked in all the more.) I’ll save the in-depth talk about why for another day, but I’ll at least give an update. Just a quick post tonight, partly to show off my awesome Extra Life Top Donor shirt in The Secret World. The TSW team really outdid themselves supporting player-run Extra Life teams this year, and this tshirt is only one of the many ways they reached out to their community.
While I’m here, a quick reminder that I’ll be joining Otterdown for an in-game TSW Extra Life wrapup party this Saturday. I haven’t heard yet if we’ll be streaming or not, but I’ll be announcing on social media if I am.
I’d also like to give a shoutout to Beth Barnes aka DJPsywarrior of Radio Free Gaia fame. Her efforts to raise $10,000 for The Malala Fund from TSW players are paying off big time. We’re only $1,522 away from the goal as I type this, and we’re all hoping to make it by the end of the year. Check out the link if you’d like to help out!
I’d planned on doing an extensive post about this year’s Extra Life event, but even after a 7 hour “nap” my brain is still pretty worn out. I still want to post something, in an attempt to communicate how blown away I am by my friends and online community.
I started streaming at 7am November 7, just hoping to reach a $200 goal. By the end of the 24 hours I’d had to increase my goal twice, with a last-minute donation bringing my total to $400. Team Otterdown as a whole managed to bring in over $5000 in donations to help sick kids. The generosity is astounding, even more so when you realize that as a team, most of our donations came from right within The Secret World community. Continue Reading
And Otterdown and I will start streaming bright and early at 8am EST. To watch us both at once, check out http://multitwitch.tv/jennettsw/darkgryphon42.
I know the blog has been silent the last couple weeks as I adjust to my new schedule. Cramming two jobs together isn’t easy at the best of times, and in this case both places are relatively short-staffed. I have a personal thing against taking extra time off when my job needs me, so I’ve been making do.
…and yet, I still kept this weekend open for Extra Life, because the difference we make in the lives of so many kids is worth taking time off for in a way my other interests aren’t.
The Extra Life tab up top will still give more details to anyone who’s hearing about this charity fundraiser for the first time, and Otterdown has put up a great post with all the different giveaways and goings-on we have planned for the day. If you can’t donate, please still feel free to stop by and cheer us on, or pass the links around.
Oh – also if I make my donation goal I’ll be dying streaks in my hair. The color will be up for a vote between Lumie blue, Templar red, or Dragon green. 😉
Short post so I can get up in the morning. Next month should also be a little less crazy for me, with more updates here. Even with the holidays, my schedules look like they will cooperate better then!
As I get ready for the first day on the new job (Yay! And to be clear, this is a second job. No way am I leaving the humane society.), thought I’d do a quick update here. Continue Reading
With thanks to Jennet for making me such an awesome banner! 🙂 For more information, check out the Extra Life menu link.
Quick post since we got news today!
I haven’t made any secret of being super excited about The Park. Since it was first announced, I’ve been looking forward to this chance to dig deeper into the lore of a very memorable location in The Secret World. I’m also thrilled that players unfamiliar with the MMO will be able to get a taste of the kind of story and atmosphere they’ve been missing out on. Experiencing a corner of that world in a single player horror game is going to be an amazing experience, I have absolutely no doubt of that!
It’s looking like we’ll all get our chance to check out the game in just a couple weeks. Funcom announced today that pre-orders are open with a release date of October 27. They also posted information over on the TSW site. Continue Reading
I guessed correctly when I said my time is going to be short for a while, between getting ready to work the second job and rushing to take care of things like eye exams before I start. I’ve still been popping into The Secret World when I can, and had some thoughts while running – and not-running – the daily challenges over the last week.
For starters, I think I ran challenges about half the days I played. These were days I couldn’t think of something else to do, and the challenges sounded appealing. The rest of the time I was re-running Orochi Tower missions since I still need some achievements and it’s been a while since I’ve done them. I’m still working on black bullion more than Marks of Pantheon, and Tokyo gives me plenty of those as is.
I compare that to the folks who feel obligated to run all of the dailies, every day, and I’m not entirely sure why there’s so much difference. I’d like to progress my gear as much as anyone else, but I don’t feel obligated at all to run any particular content. I have an idea about part of the reason, though. Continue Reading
As eager as I am to jump ingame and check out The Secret World’s new hoverboards, I promised to tell you folks the story of our very special TSW party last Thursday. So post first, hoverboard later!
Secret Worlders got a very special treat on Thursday night…
The Secret World had just introduced new RNG bags into the Item Store. These bags, planned to be the first of many, have a military theme and also introduce “Lucky Coins” with which you can purchase some of the bags’ content if you are unlucky with them. The items from the bags are all tradeable until used, and all cosmetic, so I’d say TSW has once again done Cash Shop options right. What matters to this story is a particular emote players can get through these bags or by saving up their Lucky Coins. Continue Reading
